“The first part I played was in the Nativity play at school. I auditioned for an angel and didn’t get it. I auditioned for Mary and didn’t get it. So I made up the character of the sheep who sat next to the baby Jesus. I wore a calico head thing that my mom made, and I bleated through the whole thing and got my first laugh. And that was it—I was hooked. That became a metaphor for my whole career: Every time I’ve thought, Oh, I should be Mary, I somehow go and find something offbeat and different.”
- Nicole Kidman in The Paperboy (Best Performances - W by Juergen Teller, February 2013)

“Listen to your parents and teachers. They got a line on most things, so don’t treat ‘em like enemies. There’s always an outside chance you can learn something. Try to keep an open mind. Try to understand the viewpoints of others. Consider the minority opinion. But try to get along with the majority of opinion once it’s accepted. Of course Holly and I have had fun, even if it has been rushed. And uh, so far, we’re doing fine, hadn’t got caught. Excuse the grammar.”

Quote reblogged from Pitchfork with 418 notes

What I’ve been learning over the course of my life is that diagnoses exist to help get people services they need— but there’s no such thing as mental illness. We’re all mentally ill and we’re all haunted by something, and some people manage to find a way to ride it out so that they don’t wind up needing extra help. So I think that ‘mental illness,’ as a term, is garbage. Everybody is in various states of needing to transcend something. I believe in mental health care, but when we call people ‘crazy,’ we exclude them from our circle. That’s bogus— you’re in the same boat as they are! Maybe some people are better at pretending they don’t harbor all kinds of issues, but, really, everyone has them.
The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle talks to Larry Fitzmaurice about his new album, Transcendental Youth, which details the lives of people diagnosed with mental illness. (via pitchfork)

Chat reblogged from Precarious Decadence with 10 notes

  • Danny: I see you're wearing a suit.
  • Withnail: What's it got to do with you?
  • Danny: No need to get uptight, man. I was merely making an observation. I happened to be looking for a suit for the Coalman two weeks ago. For reasons I can't really discuss with you. The Coalman had to go to Jamaica. Got busted coming back through Heathrow. Had a weight under his fez. We worked out it would be handy karma for him to get hold of a suit but he's a very low temperature spade, the Coalman. Goes into court in his kaftan and a bell. This doesn't go down at all well. They can handle the kaftan, they can't handle the bell. So, there's this judge sitting there in a cape like fucking Batman and this really rather far out looking hat.
  • Withnail: Wig.
  • Danny: No, man, this was more like a long white hat. So, he looks at the Coalman and says "What's all this? This is a court, man. This ain't fancy dress." And the Coalman looks at him and says "You think you look normal, your honour?" Cunt gave him two years.

Quote reblogged from Queen Sofia with 18 notes

People said, ‘You need to have a backup plan,’ and I said, ‘I’m not going to make the movie if Bill doesn’t do it.’ Bill has an 800-number, and I left messages. This went on for five months. Stalking Bill became my life’s work.

Quote reblogged from Queen Sofia with 17,163 notes

It’s about misunderstandings between people and places, being disconnected and looking for moments of connection. There are so many moments in life when people don’t say what they mean, when they are just missing each other, waiting to run into each other in a hallway.
